China braces for new wave of XBB .1.5 Covid variant, could see 65 million cases weekly

By the end of June, China could report 65 million coronavirus cases in a week. The country has started preparations to handle the resurgence in cases, with new Covid vaccines which will target XBB variants in the pipeline.

China is bracing for a massive wave of coronavirus cases, Bloomberg reported citing a senior health adviser. The new wave of the pandemic would likely witness a peak towards the end of June, with the country likely to report around 65 millions infections weekly.

China has witnessed a surge in Covid cases, fueled by Omicron variant XBB, since April. By the end of this month, the country is likely to report 40 million infections in a week, before peaking at 65 million weekly by the end of June, as per local media reports which cited a presentation by respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan at a biotech conference in the southern city of Guangzhou.

In the United States, XBB.1.5 now accounts for more than 40 percent of COVID-19 cases, sharply rising from 2 percent in the first week of December. It is now US’s second-most dominant strain.

The XBB.1.5, which is a descendant of the Omicron XBB subvariant, has started to rise in parts of Europe, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
